At their teleconference, on April 30, the Board of Members of the Fund for Assistance to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia approved a grant for the development of this Web site. The main benefit of this grant is that Historical Studies of the Russian Church Abroad will be updated, God willing, twice a month with text as well as audio and visual interviews and articles.

March 21, 2010: the 50th Anniversary of Archbishop Vitaly's (Maksimenko) Repose
Archbishop Vitaly’s whole life was a labor of obedience to Christ’s Church, to which he devoted his whole life without exception. The fruits of his service were the Pochaev publishing brotherhoods in Germany, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. Pravoslavnaya Rus’ (Orthodox Russia), Holy Trinity Seminary – these are the legacies of Vladyka’s that we use til this day. And our especially dearest gift from Archbishop Vitaly – to use the expression of Archpriest Andre Papkov, is our ever-memorable Vladyka, Metropolitan Laurus, for whom Archbishop Vitaly (Maximenko) served as a guiding beacon his whole life. Read the biography of Vladyka Vitaly presented by Deacon Andrei Psarev at the Pastoral Conference of the ROCOR Eastern American Diocese.

The history of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia has plenty of insufficiently explored areas. Unique photos posted on the blog of Reader Michael, from the ROCOR's British Diocese, cast light on one such terra incognita: an experiment with the western liturgical rite. Many Years to the First Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church!
His Most Holiness Patriarch Aleksei received the Russian Orthodox Church in ruins. During the eighteen years of his reign these ruins were turned into beautiful temples to the Living God.
Now his successor, Patriarch Kirill, faces the enormous task of educating his flock in responsible Christianity. On the joyful occasion of his installation we publish in ARTICLES the address by Metropolitan Laurus to the annual conference of St. Tikhon's Humanitarian University (2008). In this document, written shortly before his repose, Vladyka Laurus profoundly outlines the Orthodox teaching on catholicity (sobornost).
Publication in Russian of the first monograph on the early period of the ROCOR (1920-1925)
In 2007 St. Tikhon’s Humanitarian University published Andrei Kostriukov's Russkaia Zarubezhnaia Tserkov’ v pervoi polovine 1920-kh godov (The Russian Church Abroad in the First Half of the 1920s).
This monograph reviews in detail the circumstances of the establishment of the ROCOR, and studies groundbreaking events that have not been adequately analyzed before, including the transition of the supreme church administration from lay-clergy-bishop membership to bishop membership only.
The study is based primarily on archival sources preserved in archives such as those of the Synod of Bishops in New York and of Department of External Affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate in Moscow.

Вечная Память Святейшему Патриарху Алексию!
В этом году ушли из земной жизни два предстоятеля двух частей Русской Церкви, два архиерея «старой школы». Пожалуй, что вся противоречивая история Русской Церкви в двадцатом столетии отразилась в жизни святейшего - эмиграция, последний патриарх советского времени, первый после советского, последний патриарх непризнанный РПЦЗ и первый патриарх нового периода истории РПЦЗ. Многое, казалось, разделяло сих двух первоиерархов, но связывало их главное — любовь къ Богу, Церкви и молитве, оба владыки служили и молились до последнего издыхания, оба скончались «на посту», после совершения богослужений. Слишком тяжело сейчас дать историческую оценку этого патриаршества. Наверное только с расстояния времени историк сможет написать объективную картину. Сейчас же уместно только сказать, что подвиг самоотречения в служении Русской Церкви, молитвенная жизнь почившего и молитвы о его упокоении как Русской так и всей вселенской Православной Церкви не могут не иметь ценности у престола Владычня.
Moscow. February 15, 2009. A Must Reference Book on the History of the ROCOR Has Been Published in Moscow
St. Tikhon's Humanitarian Theological University in Moscow has published a new book by Viktor Kosik, 'Russkoe Tserkovnoe Zarubezh'e: XX vek v biografiiakh dukhoventsva ot Ameriki do Iaponii' ('Russian Church Diaspora in Biographies of Its Clergy from America to Japan,' Moscow 2008). The author is a specialist in Balkan studies and he also used to teach the course on the history of Russian church emigration at St. Tikhon's University. In 2000 he published his research on the Russian Church in Yugoslavia in the 1920-1940s. This recent study, a work of more than 400 pages, represents an ample spectrum of clergy
belonging to various ecclesiastical jurisdictions. These clergy and monastics were born in Russia and left the country before WWII. We hope that many more biographies will be appended to the second edition of this valuable book. Archpriest Peter Perekrestov from San Francisco and Inokinia Vassa (Larin) from Munich enthusiastically helped the author to gather relevant information. А.В. Псарев закончил 15-летний сбор материалов для книги посвященной биографии архиепископа Леонтия (Филипповича). В судьбе Владыки Леонтия отразились противоречия истории Русской Церкви в ХХ веке. В СССР ему привелось быть свидетелем борьбы с обновленчеством, декларации митрополита Сергия, самому пережить аресты и заключение, испытать жизнь в подполье. Будучи рукоположенным во епископа Бердичевского в 1941 году (УПЦ-МП), епископ Леонтий должен был строить церковную жизнь в условиях нацистской оккупации и партизанской войны. В эмиграции его ждала встреча с архиерееями и церковными людьми с другим опытом и психологией, а также бедственное существование в Южной Америке. Архиепископ Леонтий продолжал то, что он считал борьбой за Православие, поддерживая ревнителей в среде РПЦЗ. катакомбных христиан в СССР и старостильников в Греции. Jordanville. November 21, 2008. Research Completed for a Monograph on Archbishop Leontii of Chile
Andrei Psarev finished his 15-year research on the life of this confessor of the faith in the USSR (1904-1971) who had struggled against Renovationism there and in immigration continued a fight against what he considered apostasy from Orthodoxy. The life of this hierarch demonstrates the painful process when faithfulness of a church person to his consciences might lead to controversial consequences. This research was intended for publication in Russian in conjunction with observances on the fortieth anniversary of A. Leontii's death (2111), and is mostly based on unpublished sources: archival documents, correspondence, and reminiscences. See details in ARCHBISHOP LEONTII.

К юбилейному году двухнедельного журнала Свято-Троицкого монастыря (1928-2008)
Преподавателем Свято-Троицкой Семинарии Д.П. Анашкиным закончена работа над аннотированным каталогом. В течение пяти лет было занесено 35 тысяч записей, во многих случаях сопровождавшихся аннотацией. Указатель занимает восемь томов и делится на две части содержащие алфавитный и тематический указатель. В настоящее идет работа над созданием научно-справочного аппарата (именной указатель).
